Our Story

In 2012, Jay Krushell, a lawyer with Witten LLP, had his highest billing year ever but lost one of his best clients for one simple reason—he was too slow in producing the security documents needed to facilitate the business loan transactions he worked on. Jay’s quest to find a solution to produce security packages that were not only faster, but also much more accurate, resulted in the creation of Lending Assist. Jay convinced his wife, Kim, to leave city politics and lead a team to work with our technical partner iomer, co-founded by Jim Ward, to build Lending Assist and later Save Assist. Law firms across Alberta are already experiencing significantly reduced loan turnaround times using Lending Assist and Save Assist, with plans for expansion across Canada and into the United States in the near future.

Kim Krushell is the President of Lending Assist, a Canadian tech start-up company based in Edmonton, Alberta Canada.Lending Assist is a software product that automates the production of commercial lending documents and due diligence searches for lawyers and lenders. This product dramatically reduces loan turnaround times, decreases legal fees and increases the accuracy of commercial lending document production.  Save Assist is a secure portal that digitally stores all loan documents and has a communication tool that allows the bank to communicate with the lawyers acting for it on loan transactions in a secure environment.

Kim also believes in giving back… She is Vice Chair for the University of Alberta Property Trust Inc. which was recently set up to generate revenue for the university by developing designated university lands.  And she is the Vice Chair and Co-Chairing the Planning Committee for Women and Money (wamcan.ca) a new volunteer initiative reaching out to all women on the issue of financial empowerment.

Prior to Lending Assist Kim served 3 terms as an elected City Councillor for the City of Edmonton in Ward 2 representing over 70,000 residents in a city of 850,000. Kim was born and raised in Southern California. She met her Canadian husband Jay, while they both studied as university exchange students at Yonsei University in Seoul, South Korea. Today Kim lives in Edmonton with Jay and their son Alex.

A solicitor focused on commercial lending, real estate, and corporate/commercial law, Jay earned his B.Comm (1990), M.B.A. (1997), and LL.B. (1998) at the University of Alberta. He was admitted to the Alberta bar in 1999. Jay has been involved with various boards and community organizations. Outside of work he is an avid runner (with 19 marathons under his belt), gardener (whose yard has been nominated twice for the Yards in Bloom competition), and poker player (the only two-time winner of the Annual Witten Poker Tournament). He is also a life-long comic book collector with an impressive collection of graphic novels. He and his wife Kim have one son, Alex.

Founder, iomer Internet Solutions

Founder of iomer internet solutions, a software development firm. He got his first computer in 1987, but didn’t really fit in until he founded his first company in 2000. Jim has a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from the University of Alberta, and a diploma in Computer Systems Technology from the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology. Jim is a long time member of the Entrepreneur’s Organization, and has founded three successful technology start-ups. He is also a co-owner of nForm User Experience Ltd, providing strategy, design, evaluation for organizations with complex web properties.
